Firefox Dictionary Plugin
Sep 30th, 2008 by trevelyan
A quick note to let readers here know we’ve quietly added a Firefox Dictionary Plugin to our roster of Popup Chinese products and services for learning Chinese. The plugin is in beta testing and you’re all welcome to throw yourselves at it. It provides:
- Toggle on/off dictionary popups when you mouseover Chinese text ANYWHERE on the Internet
- Easy switching between simplified and traditional display options (press “D” when the popup is open)
- Easy editing (click once to freeze the popup, and then click on any field you wish to edit)
- Easy word addition (highlight missing words and the plugin will invite you to add them)
- Full integration with Popup Chinese - if you edit or add a word we’ll automatically save it for you on the site. If you regenerate the plugin, it will include all of your previously saved edits.
Our community largely consists of advanced (effective!) learners, so we’ve designed this as a translation support tool for people who use Chinese professionally. The advantages to students are also obvious though, especially with a lot of its smaller features, such as automatic translation of Chinese numbers. Worry no more about how many万 are in an亿. We will take care of you.
On a closing note, please be aware you’ll need a premium account to generate this plugin, since it *is* fully customized. Dictionary software on your terms, or something like that. Our voucher code 2008AOYUN can be used to get free premium access while we are still in beta, so I’d encourage anyone to take advantage of this offer while it’s hot. It’s looking like we’ll be leaving beta in just over a week at this point.
I call “boo!” on the auto number translation — being able to do big numbers in Chinese is an important and hard-won skill!
Well… if it’s any consolation, the thing seems to be screwing up GB2312 numbers….
